(I'm sure you know who I am. So starting from the left: Shiela, Kate, Rebekah.)
So, I'm sure you all are wondering about my living situation in Kaohsiung. The Foundation rented out three apartments, and each apartment has four singles. We randomly drew slips of paper to see which apartment we would live in and who we would live with. I am still baffled by how great this selection system was because I don't think the rooming situation would have worked out that great had we selected roommates ourselves.
Let me just tell you upfront that I'm living in a REALLY SWEET apartment and have three AWESOME roommates – Rebekah, Shiela, and Kate. Rebekah is from New Jersey, and she always naps on the couch in the living room (Hence, we don't know much about her...just kidding). Shiela is our psuedo RA because she's in charge of letting us know when the bill arrives, getting money from us, and paying them. She's hilarious. Yesterday, we watched Hairspray - the new one - and the opening song is "Good Morning Baltimore." Baltimore is repeatedly sung by Tracy, but yet Shiela proceeds to ask, "Where is this movie taking place?" But in defense of Shiela, she was very focused typing on her computer during the song. Another even funnier Shiela-moment was when she asked, "What's that Disney movie with cars?" And then a minute later, she answers her own question: "Oh, Cars." So, let's just say, Shiela is very entertaining. Oh yeah, Shiela is from Colorado. Kate balances out our loud apartment with her funny and peaceful personality. Her laughter vibrates, literally. Kate and I are tight; we communicate by just looking at each other. She's from Virginia. Honestly, I love my apartment mates. We are truly a family: Kate and I are the mom and dad, respectively. And Shiela and Rebekah are the daughters. This dynamic was established one night when Shiela and Rebekah decided to go out clubbing, and Kate and I decided to stay back.
Just to illustrate how well we all work together, I will convey an incident that just happened as I was writing this blog. So, cockroaches are an issue in our apartment, especially for Kate's room which is right next to the kitchen. As I was typing away, Kate screamed and did one of her vibrating laughs and told us how she just saw a cockroach go into her room. And we all ran to her room and saw the roach crawling around on her floor. And Shiela goes, "I'll get the plunger!" Yes, a bathroom plunger, and I went to get the roach repellent. This is our method to deal with cockroaches: We plunge it to death. Then, we lift up the plunger slightly to spray the repellent and suffocate the roach. Isn't this great team work or what?
