I graduated from Colby College with honors in American Studies and a minor in Chinese. American Studies is an interdisciplinary major, and it teaches students to critically examine America's cultural history. As my thesis adviser always told me, it involves a close analysis of "the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves." For my honor's thesis, I explored the representation of Chinese men in Kung Fu films and the way such representation construct notions of masculinity. Thus, I watched all of Bruce Lee's movies and Jackie Chan films that were ever made, as well as some transnational films - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hero, and Shaolin Soccer.
I had a great four years living in rural Waterville, Maine, but I'm very happy that my hometown is in New York City, where there is public transportation. Currently, I am in Kaohsiung, Taiwan (高雄,台灣) on a Fulbright Fellowship. I will be working as an English Teaching Assistant for the year in a local elementary school. Upon returning to the States, I will begin my Masters in Childhood Education and eventually teach in the NYC public school system. (In the pic is me and my idol, Jonathan Kozol!)
